SHAMBHALA DAY marks the beginning of the Tibetan New Year, and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism. Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year’s celebration of Losar, the day is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, and changes every year to coincide with the annual lunar cycles.

This year, we celebrate Shambhala Day on Saturday, February 17, 2018.  It is a time for us to express the wealth and richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through feasting and conviviality.  This coming year is the YEAR OF THE EARTH DOG. In the animal zodiac, dog year individuals are the most humanitarian, are selfless givers, and strive for justice and equality. They are fiercely loyal, decent, and courageous and are also magnanimous and prosperous. With the added element of earth, the energy of the dog is efficient, grounded, and vigilant.

Shambhala Day is also the season to support the Sakyong Potrang (the seat of the Sakyong lineage and activities and teachings of the Sakyong) and Shambhala Central Services. Please plan to join the fundraising at the afternoon festivities or indicate “Shambhala Day” when you donate online HERE.  Our gifts allow other to experience the Shambhala teachings just as we have. What we give will allow others to benefit in the same way we have.

There are FOUR ELEMENTS of the day and you are invited to attend all or parts of the programming!

*6:30-8:00 am - Great Eastern Sunrise Ceremony:  Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche began the tradition of celebrating Shambhala Day with a sunrise ceremony that includes traditional morning chants and toasts for the new year.  We’ll have a light offering of fruit, hard-boiled eggs and some pastries.  $5.00 suggested donation  RSVP to: [email protected]
