Traditionally, it was believed that the path to enlightenment required a practitioner to withdraw from ordinary life and devote themselves to intensive practice either in monasteries or seclusion. But such an approach is not the only avenue. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche first introduced an alternative path to the West in his classic text “Meditation in Action”. In this simple but profound book, Trungpa Rinpoche discusses how we can use the ordinary activities of our lives to wake up. Drawing upon the skillful methods of mindfulness and perfection practices Rinpoche shows how these teachings can be applied to our everyday encounters with work, family, and play.

This book group is open to both newer and advanced practitioners; having some grounding in shamatha meditation is strongly encouraged. For those of us engaged in the activities of the Shambhala Center in particular, this will be an opportunity to discuss as a community how our efforts can become a fertile ground for cultivating awareness on the spot. As stated on the back of the text, “Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche shows that meditation extends beyond the normal practice of sitting to build the foundation for compassion, awareness, and creativity in all aspects of life.”

If you are planning to attend, please read the first chapter before the first class.
